POZ Track-By-Track: Captain, We’re Sinking - The Future Is Cancelled
Captain Weāre Sinkingās new album,Ā The Future Is Cancelled, came out a few weeks ago via Run For Cover Records, and PropertyOfZack is loving the release. The band was kind enough to write up a Track-By-Track feature for the record to take fans behind the scenes on the albumās songs, and weāre stoked to be posting it. Check it out below!
AdulteryĀ
This was one of the first songs we had for the record. When we first started writing the record we wanted it to be this big dramatic thing, so we had this long drawn out intro to this song that totally sucked. Im glad we cut that. This song was actually written in like 2010 or something. I know I was still living inĀ New YorkĀ at the time. I think anyone that listens to it can hear the obvious Nirvana influence. Nirvana is by far my favorite band and when I first wrote this song I kept it in the shadows for a long time because I thought it was too Nirvana-esque. I recorded a demo of it and Bill (our drummer) heard it and said it sounded like Fugazi. Nice! The lyrics just came from snippets of a journal I had. The lyric āmy best friend is my dogā came from my Dadās dog Teddy sitting next to me while playing it and barking the entire time to go out and run around. For a long time there was a back and forth whether Adultery or Brother would open the record. Im glad we chose Adultery.Ā
Ā
BrotherĀ
Brother is an interesting song because it was the song that made us get over this year long writing block. We had the same four or five songs for like two years for the album and never got a steady pace of writing going. When I showed Leo this song he had all these ideas about how to play it and using the chorus at the end of the album and it kind of sprang us to life. After we learned this song, songs just started popping up. I guess Iāll always have a soft spot for this song because of that. I wanted to write a song about the town that I grew up in and the overall feeling there. The music came from me trying to write an electric version of the Saves The Day song āCoconutā.Ā

Annina, We Will Miss You
This song is the only song on the record that was written by all of us out of nothing. I had the little jangle guitar riff and Bill picked it up and created the rhythm for it. Leo then added the little space adventure part where he starts singing (we called it space adventure because I used to use this wacky delay petal during it. I stopped doing that). The title of this song is actually kind of funny. My Dad got me an Ipad for Christmas one year and had it engraved with my initials in the back of it (REB). He also got this girl, Aninna, one as a thank you gift for working with his law firm for a year or so. He mixed them up, so when I opened mine up on that back of it it says āAninna, We Will Miss You!ā. He now uses the one that says REB on the back of it, I still have the Aninna one, and he got another one for her. Thats a lot of Ipads.Ā
Ā
The Future is CancelledĀ
This song was also one of the first ones we learned for the record. The name of this song (and then eventually the album) came from our friend Sean. It was Billās idea to make it super fast in the beginning and try to make it a total punch in the face song. Thereās actually a āFuture is Cancelled pt. IIā that was going to be on the record as well but we never got around to finishing it. It will probably go on an Ep or something.Ā
